Colorado was originally called The territory of Jefferson.

Colorado became The Territory of Jefferson in 1861

Eastern Colorado was  Originally acquired by the United States under the Louisiana Purchase on April 30, 1803

Colorado became the 38th state of the union on August 1, 1876. 

Colorado was the second state in the union  to extend the right to vote to women in 1894.

The word Colorado is Spanish for "color red"

The official state flag of Colorado was adopted on June 5, 1911 and was designed by Andrew Carlisle Carson.

 The colors of the Colorado State flag represent certain geographical features of our state:.

The Gold is for the abundant  sunshine
 that our state enjoys.
The white represents the snowcapped mountains

The blue stands for
our clear blue skies.

The red represents the ruddy color of much of our state's soil

Attached to the flag is a cord of gold and silver, intertwined with gold and silver tassels
